Big Bear Lake has a wide variety of things to do but what makes it truly special is being surrounded by National Forest Land. This allows visitors and residents alike to enjoy nature that is impossible in most areas of Southern California. Many people refer to Big Bear, rightly so, as "God's Country". This week we have had the special treat to watch two bald eagles born....and then the ongoing feeding regimen by mom and dad. This a first in my 32 years living in Big Bear and is absolutely amazing to see.
While the birth of bald eagles may be unique, wildlife in and around Big Bear Valley is commonplace. Some of the highlights I personally remember witnessing: coyotes hunting gophers in the Bear Mountain beginner slope one spring; A black bear searching for food next to one of my real estate for sale signs; the shiny eyes of a raccoon family making their way from food to shelter... or up the tree to escape our dogs; the huge bobcat that travels the canyon behind our home; and the momma bear and her two cubs I saw ambling into the forest early one fall morning. Deer are commonly seen at certain time of the year as well.
We are also blessed with world class mountain biking, trail running, and hiking opportunities in the National Forest surrounding town. The Pacific Crest Trail runs through Big Bear Valley along the east and north edges of the valley offering locals the opportunity to meet hikers making a quick pit-stop as they make their pilgrimage or sabbatical late spring thru fall.
